  • Continuing Mandarin Chinese

    Building on foundational Mandarin Chinese language skills, this 8-week course will help students enhance their ability to travel in China and converse with native Chinese speakers with confidence. You will learn vocabulary and phrases that are essential for various travel situations, from exploring famous landmarks to bargaining in markets. The course also dives into contemporary Chinese culture, offering insights into popular traditions, modern entertainment, and daily life in China. Through engaging activities, speaking and listening comprehension will be prioritized, while optional assignments will introduce students to reading and writing Chinese characters. Additionally, the course will feature an optional "9th class" at a local Chinese restaurant to immerse students in authentic cultural experiences. By the end of the course, students will: • Acquire useful travel-related vocabulary and phrases for various situations in China. • Gain an understanding of contemporary Chinese culture and traditions. • Improve speaking and listening skills through class activities. • Learn basic reading and writing of Chinese characters through optional homework. • Develop a deeper appreciation for Chinese cuisine, music, and other cultural practices. About the Instructor: Mary Field is a dedicated Chinese language instructor with a wealth of experience in teaching students of different backgrounds and proficiency levels. She creates a supportive and interactive learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and taking risks with the language. She uses a variety of communication styles to emphasize real-life language use and cultural context to strengthen students' understanding and appreciation of Mandarin Chinese. After living in China for seven years, she started teaching Chinese in Texas in 2015. She founded the Chinese immersion program at the International School of San Antonio.
  • Spanish Beginners II

    Spanish Beginners II will be covering Chapters 1 through 10 of Margarita Madrigal's books. We will be covering conjugation of regular verbs, and also learn irregular verbs "Ser and Estar". We will also cover the different parts of how to form a regular sentence with the basic parts of grammar like articles, nouns, prepositions and adjectives. We will implement basic conversation, like greetings, and how to ask questions, give directions. We will read and translate, and also watch "Destinos", a Spanish soap opera. We will use Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish ISBN #978-0-385-41095-3, Easy Spanish Reader ISBN #978-0-07-142-806-4 2nd or 3rd edition, and Spanish Verb Tenses Practice Makes Perfect by Dorothy Richmond 3rd, 4th, or 5th edition.*Books are not included.
  • Spanish Beginners III

    This class will take you through the paces of stem changing and irregular verbs in the present and past tenses. You will learn more about the plural forms of -ar, -er and -ir verbs in the present and past tenses. Other topics covered will include present and past tenses of the verb "to be" and the progressive tense. You will continue to use "Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish" by Margarita Madrigal and will cover chapters 5-8 in "Practice Makes Perfect Spanish Verb Tenses" by Dorothy Richmond and the Easy Spanish Reader by William T Tardy.   • Spanish Intermediate II

    Spanish Intermediate II will be cover Chapters 28 through 32 and reviewing Present, Preterite, Near Future, Present Progressive and Present Perfect conjugations in Margarita Madrigal's book. In the Spanish Verb Tenses book the class will cover Chapters 13 through 16 Preterite, Imperfect and Future tenses. In class, you will be watching Destinos episodes 11,12,13. and will also be doing a little bit of conversation and listening.
